We get a lot of questions. Some thoughtful, some blunt, and a surprising number that start with "okay but is this actually fish on my face?" All deserve honest answers. Here are the 15 we hear most often. Prefer to shop? Browse salmon DNA skincare.
1. What actually is PDRN?
PDRN stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, a fragment of DNA derived from salmon (specifically the milt). These fragments are biocompatible with human skin, so the body recognises and tolerates them well. In skincare, PDRN is valued for supporting the appearance of hydrated, calm, even-looking skin over time. Full guide: What is PDRN?
2. Is it literally fish on my face?
No. PDRN is a purified DNA fragment extracted from salmon. By the time it reaches your skin it's been processed, purified and formulated into a serum, no fish smell, no fish texture. It's a clear, lightweight liquid that absorbs in seconds.
3. Is it safe for people with seafood allergies?
Seafood allergies are typically triggered by proteins; PDRN is a nucleotide, not a protein. That said, if you have a fish allergy, always patch test first and consult your doctor before use. Better safe than sorry.
4. How is PDRN different from hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, it attracts and holds water. PDRN supports the skin in a different, gentler way. They're not competitors; many people use both. Full comparison: PDRN vs Hyaluronic Acid.
5. Do I need microneedling to use PDRN?
No. PDRN works as a daily topical serum on intact skin, no needles required. Professional microneedling with PDRN (using Curenex) is an option, but most of our customers use VITARAN at home daily. More: PDRN without microneedling.
6. How long before I see results?
Most people notice skin feeling more comfortable and hydrated within a week or two, with visible improvements in the look of texture and tone over 3-6 weeks of consistent daily use. It's cumulative, not overnight.
7. Can I use it if I have sensitive skin?
Yes, PDRN is one of the gentlest actives available. No sting, no flushing, no adjustment period. It's especially popular with people who can't tolerate retinoids, vitamin C or acids. Full guide: PDRN for Sensitive Skin.
8. How often should I use it?
Daily, morning and evening, one capsule per application, pressed gently into clean skin. Consistency beats quantity. Detailed routine: How Often Should You Use PDRN?
9. What's the difference between VITARAN and Curenex?
VITARAN is a daily topical PDRN serum in individually sealed capsules for home use. Curenex is a professional-grade PDRN serum for application during and after clinical microneedling. Same core ingredient, different delivery contexts.
10. Can I use PDRN with retinol or tretinoin?
Yes, they complement each other well. Layer the retinoid first (on dry skin), then PDRN, then moisturiser. Full guide: Can You Use PDRN with Tretinoin?
11. Can I use it with vitamin C?
Yes. Apply vitamin C in the morning first, let it absorb, then PDRN on top. They don't interfere.
12. What about during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
There isn't specific research on topical PDRN during pregnancy or breastfeeding. As with any skincare, consult your healthcare provider before introducing new products during this time for personalised guidance.
13. Why are the capsules individually sealed?
Freshness and hygiene. Each VITARAN capsule is a single dose sealed in its own container, so it's not exposed to air, light or bacteria between uses, no preservative system needed. Crack, use, done.
14. Is salmon DNA skincare approved in Australia?
PDRN skincare sold in Australia is classified as a cosmetic, not a therapeutic good. It's formulated and sold in compliance with Australian cosmetic regulations, and isn't on the ARTG because it's not a medicine and makes no therapeutic claims, it supports the appearance of healthy-looking skin, it doesn't treat or cure conditions.
15. Where does the salmon come from?
The PDRN is sourced from salmon milt via Korean laboratories that specialise in nucleotide extraction and purification, Korea is the global leader in PDRN research, with the longest track record. The extraction process is well established and rigorously purified.
