Australian winter doesn't get enough credit for how hard it is on your skin. It's not dramatic like a Scandinavian freeze. It doesn't crack your lips the moment you walk outside. It's subtler than that, which is exactly why most people don't adjust their routine until it's too late and they're sitting at their desk in July wondering why their face feels like cardboard.
Here's what actually changes in winter, and how to adjust without overcomplicating things.
What winter does to your skin
Lower humidity. Even in Brisbane, humidity drops noticeably from April through September. In Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth, it drops significantly. Lower humidity means your skin loses moisture to the air faster than it can replace it.
Indoor heating. Offices, cars, bedrooms — all pumping out dry, heated air that strips moisture from your skin all day. You might be outside for 20 minutes but you're in artificially dried air for eight hours.
Hot showers. Everyone takes longer, hotter showers in winter. Hot water strips the skin's natural oils faster than lukewarm water. By the time you've finished your ten minute steam session, your barrier has taken a hit.
UV that's still there. This is the one most Australians underestimate. Winter UV in Australia is lower than summer, but it's still significantly higher than winter UV in Europe or North America. You still need SPF. Every day.
How to adjust your routine
You don't need to overhaul everything. You need to make three small changes.
1. Add a hydration layer
If you're using PDRN on its own in summer, winter is the time to add hyaluronic acid underneath it. Layer order: cleanse, hyaluronic acid on damp skin, PDRN serum on top, then moisturiser. The HA pulls moisture to the surface. The PDRN supports calm, comfortable looking skin. The moisturiser seals everything in.

2. Go one step richer on moisturiser
If you use a gel moisturiser in summer, switch to a cream in winter. If you use a light cream, step up to a medium one. You don't need to go full petroleum jelly. Just one weight class up from whatever you normally use.
At night, you can go even richer since you're not layering SPF on top.
3. Shorten your showers and lower the temperature
This is the advice nobody wants to hear. Lukewarm water is kinder to your skin than hot water. Five minutes is kinder than fifteen. If you can't bring yourself to take a cold shower (fair), at least turn the temperature down one notch and get out a few minutes sooner. Your skin will notice the difference within a week.
Winter mistakes to avoid
Skipping SPF. Australian winter UV is still high enough to cause damage. Wear it every day.
Over exfoliating. When your skin is flaky and dry, the instinct is to scrub harder. Don't. Flakiness in winter is usually a hydration problem, not a dead skin problem. Adding more exfoliation will make it worse. Add moisture instead.
Switching your entire routine at once. If you're going to change products for winter, change one thing at a time. Give each change a week before introducing the next one so you can tell what's helping and what isn't.
Forgetting your lips and hands. Your face gets all the attention but your lips and hands are losing moisture even faster because the skin is thinner. A good lip balm and a hand cream are not optional in winter.
The winter routine, simplified
Morning: Gentle cleanser, hyaluronic acid (if you use it), VITARAN PDRN serum, cream moisturiser, SPF 50+.
Evening: Double cleanse (if you wore SPF or makeup), VITARAN, richer moisturiser.
That's it. The same core as your summer routine, just with a slightly heavier moisturiser and an optional extra hydration layer. Simple adjustments, meaningful results.
